Dear [Blicero],

"What are you going to do on Inauguration Day?" At least in Washington, that's a question you hear Democrats asking one another as George W. Bush's inaugural celebration approaches. Do you want to know my answer?

Join the million-strong Democrats who are standing up to fight for what we believe in.

I'm going to stand with over a million grassroots Democrats who have entered 2005 with a fighting spirit by renewing their 2005 financial support for the Democratic Party in advance of January 20.

Look, we Democrats can either swallow all of the Republicans' malarkey about "the people have spoken" and go hide in a corner somewhere. Or we can fully embrace the grassroots power that we so clearly demonstrated in 2004. Renew your support today at:

James Carville
------------

Dear Mr. Carville,

I love you man, but you've got to be fucking kidding. Give money to the DNC? Jesus Christ! After all the hundreds of dollars I gave in 2004, only to have Kerry concede before the votes had even been counted, before the fraud had even begun to be accounted for? I mean honestly, in what sense can one purport to show a "fighting spirit" by giving yet more dough to Loser Headquarters? I know that sounds harsh, but Christ, "grassroots power"? What power? Power to start kicking off the Bayh '08 campaign? We're totally powerless. I would like some power very badly. If you can explain to me how, and to what end, my giving $20 to the DNC might constitute "grassroots power," then my Visa number is yours. Until then,

I am faithfully yours,

Blicero

Sun God?

This has got to be one of the weirdest and most fucked-up things I've ever heard. (Thanks to the Mike Malloy show for the heads-up.)

Other instructions given performers include a warning not to look directly at Bush while passing the presidential reviewing stand, not to look to either side and not to make any sudden movements.

"They want you to just look straight ahead," said Danielle Adam, co-director of the Mid American Pompon All Star Team from Michigan, which also performed in the 2001 inaugural parade.

Thursday Cat Blogging

I never intended AmCop to be the sort of place where we'd chuckle over the cleverness of New Yorker cartoons, but in this case I just couldn't help myself.

That's funny, right?

A poor choice of costume?

From The Fixins Bar:

I like this headline because of the quotes around 'sorry' -- as though Yahoo news isn't really buying it at all. You kind of picture them doing the finger air quotes thing.

Prince Harry 'sorry' for wearing Nazi costume

LONDON (AFP) - Britain's Prince Harry apologized after he was pictured on the front page of The Sun newspaper in a Nazi soldier's uniform which he wore to a fancy dress party.

Thursday's edition of the Sun features Prince Harry, younger son of Britain's Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, wearing the uniform with an armband showing a swastika, emblem of the Nazi Party.

A spokeswoman for the royal family who was contacted by AFP read a statement of apology.

"I am very sorry if I caused any offense or embarrassment to anyone. It was a poor choice of costume and I apologize," Prince Harry said in the statement.

Oh, and the update: CNN continues to ask the tough questions in their website polls.

DeLay/Tsunami Mailbag

Well, it's been over a week since AmCop broke the story about Tom DeLay using the Bible to publicly mock the tsunami victims, but the comments keep rolling in. One friendly reader, whose nom de plume is "throw down on a duck blind !", writes the following:

LIBERALS

"So..do you..do you..suppose we should talk about money ?

Move to Bulgaria, China or Morocco ~ when you start to miss the 'big christian consumer fuck fest' dont come crying back to America with your tail between you legs...

One month in a Bulgarian ghetto and you would suck Bush's cock real good for the chance to come back and be the biggest fuckin kkkonservative, toothless redneck in the country..

The truth is most of us in here dont live in a Bulgarian ghetto and will never know what this is like.

My girlfriend has lived in a Bulgarian Ghetto and when I showed her this blog she laughed and said..

"I do not have the privilege to complain"

Fuck me? Fuck you! Fuck you and this whole city and everyone in it. Fuck the panhandlers, grubbing for money, and smiling at me behind my back. Fuck the squeegee men dirtying up the clean windshield of my car. Get a fucking job! Fuck the Sikhs and the Pakistanis bombing down the avenues in decrepit cabs, curry steaming out their pores, stinking up my day. Terrorists in fucking training. SLOW THE FUCK DOWN! Fuck the Chelsea boys with their waxed chests and pumped up biceps. Going down on each other in my parks and on my piers, jingling their dicks on my Channel 35. Fuck the Korean grocers with their pyramids of overpriced fruit and their tulips and roses wrapped in plastic. Ten years in the country, still no speaky English? Fuck the Russians in Brighton Beach. Mobster thugs sitting in cafés, sipping tea in little glasses, sugar cubes between their teeth. Wheelin' and dealin' and schemin'. Go back where you fucking came from! Fuck the black-hatted Hasidim, strolling up and down 47th s

"throw down on a duck blind !" doesn't finish his comment, but I think we get the gist. I also suspect his literary flair--"curry steaming out their pores"--will not go unappreciated.

Leave No "Behind" Behind

From The Raw Story:

In 1997, Williams was sued in a massive $200,000 50-charge sexual harassment suit for repeatedly kissing his once male trainer Stephen Gregory who he had promoted repeatedly into his talk-show staff. Gregory claimed Williams had also grabbed his buttocks and genitals and climbed into bed with him on business trips. After rebuffing him, Gregory alleged, the pundit retaliated by reducing his pay and subsequently firing him.

At the time, the Williams had just teased an explosive quote from then-Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott who said that gays should be treated like those who have a problem with “alcohol … or sex addiction … or kleptomaniacs.”

Williams roundly supported this view.

Williams failed to get the suit dismissed in 1998. His once-trainer presented an affidavit from a man who claimed Armstrong propositioned him in 1996 and also had testimony from an ex-intern who said he had brushed off Williams’ advances his first day on the job.

Borat Appears in Roanoke

Rodeo in Salem gets unexpected song rendition

Speaking in broken English, the mysterious man first told the decidedly pro-American crowd - it was a rodeo, of all things, in Salem, of all places - that he supported the war on terrorism.

"I hope you kill every man, woman and child in Iraq, down to the lizards," he said, according to Brett Sharp of Star Country WSLC, who was also on stage that night as a media sponsor of the rodeo.

An uneasy murmur ran through the crowd.

"And may George W. Bush drink the blood of every man, woman and child in Iraq," he continued, according to Robynn Jaymes, who co-hosts a morning radio show with Sharp and was also among the stunned observers.

The crowd's reaction was loud enough for John Saunders, the civic center's assistant director, to hear from the front office. "It was a restless kind of booing," Saunders said.

I think Sacha Cohen might be America's last chance.

Making Sense of the Tsunami: Some Perspectives

Why does it seem like so many of the public figures making comments about the "meaning" (i.e., the "religious" "meaning") of the tsunami disaster are talking about neither the human sufferers, nor the waves, nor meaning, nor religion, nor God, but rather chewing on their own turds, swallowing them, and then regurgitating the turds onto a microphone?

For instance, this bishop sounds to me like an asshole:

RAFAEL EPSTEIN: The Anglican Dean of Sydney, Phillip Jensen, is quoted in a newspaper saying that disasters are a part of God's warning that judgement is coming. What does that comment mean?

ROBERT FORSYTH: Firstly, I think the Dean said many other things that the paper did not publish, that disasters can function this way. And the Dean really is merely following the example of Jesus. I know this may shock people – when Jesus was asked about a natural disaster, a tower that had fallen on people, and people whom Herod had killed, they said to him, 'We're these people more sinful than the rest?' And Jesus wouldn't answer that sort of silly question. He said, 'Be warned, you will all perish unless you repent'. In other words, without explaining the diaster, even Jesus drew people's attention to let the disasters be a warning to them, of their own mortality and need to be right with God.

These non-Christian religious figures sound to me like major sons of bitches:

"This is an expression of God's great ire with the world," Israeli chief rabbi Shlomo Amar told Reuters. "The world is being punished for wrongdoing — be it people's needless hatred of each other, lack of charity, moral turpitude."

Pandit Harikrishna Shastri, a priest of New Delhi's huge marble and sandstone Birla Hindu temple, told Reuters the disaster was caused by a "huge amount of pent-up man-made evil on earth" and driven by the positions of the planets.

Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra, a leading British Muslim cleric from Leicester in England said: "We believe that God has ultimate controlling power over his entire creation. We have a responsibility to try and attract god's kindness and mercy and not do anything that would attract his anger."

Jennifer Giroux, director, Women Influencing the Nation sounds to me like someone with a knife sticking out of her throat:

Throughout history and reported early in the Bible, God has always used plagues, floods and natural disasters as a source of punishment.

One can talk about a sad lost generation over there in the disaster going on in Asia. We have a lost generation of 40 million aborted babies in this country that is being ignored by so many people. I believe that this situation that happens makes all of us look inward, realize God is ultimately in control of life and death.

Look at what we're looking with just in this country with cloning, homosexuality, trying to make homosexual marriages, abortion, lack of God in the schools, taking Jesus out of Christmas. I can't pretend to know the mind of God. But, historically, there have been warnings. And God, who is all-loving and all-good, and he will not be mocked.

And last but not least, Tom Delay sounds to me like vicious, baby-devouring, bloodthirsty murderer:

Everyone who listens to these words of mine, and acts on them, will be like a wise man, who built his house on a rock:

The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew, and buffeted the house, but it did not collapse; it has been set solidly on rock.

And everyone who listens to these words of mine, but does not act on them, will be like a fool who built his house on sand:

The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew, and buffeted the house, and it collapsed and was completely ruined."

These people have no fucking shame--none of them.

The motto for the past week should have been, "Send your $100, then shut the fuck up. Don't add to the world's misery by trying to make sounds come out of the hole under your nose."

And we thought Canada was so liberal...

We may execute our prisoners, bash our gays, and condemn our poor, but at least we know how to say "developmentally disabled."

Or as Holla! puts it: "Is this maybe a slightly insensitive headline?"

"An Object of Love"

I wonder if The Rod might be used as a loving form of "training" for prisoners at Abu Ghraib?

Bullock, a Southern Baptist, said he stands by the virtue of The Rod, which, he said, is safer than a belt or paddle. He said he believes his product is in keeping with biblical teachings that rods be used only as a ''last resort" to train children. He opposes its use on babies. He said he sold the device at a rate of ''a few a week" over the last six years or so. Many of his customers returned for more rods, and cited the Scriptures when they made their purchases, he said.

''I'm one of these simple people," Bullock said. ''The Bible is what it is -- I'm not trying to change it. God is right. We have to have faith in that."

Bullock's convictions about corporal punishment are shared by many religious leaders. James Dobson, founder of the group Focus on the Family, one of the nation's prominent Christian evangelical organizations, has written about the proper use of spanking for children who willfully disobey parents, sanctioning the use of a ''neutral" object such as a paddle in order for the hand to be reserved as ''an object of love."

Succeeding Spitzer

Not exactly at the top of the news agenda, but Howard Dean's DFA is endorsing Sean Patrick Maloney to succeed Eliot Spitzer (who will be running for governor) as NY Attorney General. Maloney's an interesting figure--former Wall Street guy, former Clinton advisor, and gay parent of three. Here's his website if you're interested.
